How to write a CS internship resume
The single-column typeset format that dominates campus recruiting, what goes in each section when you don't have experience yet, and how to write bullets that survive both the ATS and the six-second skim.

Walk down any row at a university career fair and the resumes in recruiters’ hands look strikingly similar: one column, black text on white, a small-caps name, thin rules under each section heading. That’s not a coincidence and it’s not laziness — it’s a convention that took over CS and engineering recruiting because it works. It parses cleanly in applicant tracking systems, it reads fast for a human doing a six-second first pass, and it signals that you know the norms of the industry you’re trying to enter.
This guide covers the format, the section order that makes sense for a student, and — the part most guides skip — how to actually write the bullets.
The format: one column, typeset, one page
Big internship programs screen thousands of applications with software before a human reads anything. Multi-column layouts, graphics, skill bars, photos, and text boxes are exactly the things that make parsers misread your resume — a two-column layout can get read left-to-right straight across, interleaving your education with your skills into nonsense. The safe, standard choice:
- One column. Content flows top to bottom; nothing sits beside anything else.
- Real text, no graphics. No headshot, no icons, no skill-level bars (they communicate nothing verifiable anyway).
- One page. As a student you don’t have two pages of relevant material, and recruiters know it.
- Consistent typesetting. Aligned dates on the right, consistent spacing, a clear visual hierarchy. This is why the LaTeX look became the standard — the typesetting discipline is built in.
Section order for students
The rule: most convincing evidence first. For a student, that usually means:
- Education — school, degree, expected graduation date, GPA if it’s 3.5+, and relevant coursework if you lack experience to show instead.
- Experience — internships, research positions, TA jobs, part-time work. Yes, non-tech jobs count: shipping burritos on time under pressure is still evidence of showing up and executing.
- Projects — for most underclassmen this section does the heavy lifting. Treat each project with the same structure as a job: name, tech stack, dates, bullets.
- Skills — languages, frameworks, tools. Last, because it’s claims rather than evidence; the sections above prove it.
If you have real internship experience already, Experience moves above Education’s details in emphasis — but for a first or second internship, this order is right.
Writing bullets that actually say something
The formula that works: action verb + what you built + technology + measurable outcome. The most common student-resume failure is describing responsibilities instead of results.
Weak
• Worked on the backend of a web application using Node.js.
Strong
• Built a REST API in Node.js/Express serving 15 endpoints for a course-scheduling app used by 300+ students; cut average page load from 2.1s to 400ms by adding Redis caching.
Every project has numbers if you look: users, requests, data volume, time saved, percentage improvements, GitHub stars, team size. If a project truly has no numbers yet, put the scope in concrete nouns instead — “parses three file formats,” “deployed on a Raspberry Pi cluster.” Never invent metrics: interviewers ask about the exact numbers on your resume, and one hollow answer costs more than a plain bullet ever would.
The skills section, honestly
List what you could survive an interview question about. Splitting into Languages / Frameworks & Technologies / Tools reads cleanly and matches how ATS keyword matching works. Skip proficiency percentages and years-of-experience counts — at student level they invite skepticism rather than confidence.
Beat the ATS by checking, not guessing

Common mistakes that get resumes binned
- A photo, an “objective” paragraph, or “references available upon request” — all noise, all dated.
- Two-column layouts and design-heavy templates (parser poison, see above).
- Paragraph-style descriptions instead of bullets — nobody reads them in six seconds.
- Listing every technology you’ve ever touched. Ten sharp skills beat thirty vague ones.
- One resume for every posting. The 80% version is fine to start, but the callbacks come from the tailored 100% versions.
